The phrase alone has meant many things to the generations. From those wishing to come to America for the goal of owning slaves, to the wishes of those wanting emancipation. The American Dream is somewhat of a national paradox, and one that Troy Maxson recognizes. He tries to break down the social and racial fences that separate his family while still being aware that they exist to bring about his downfall.

A Dream Deferred

By Langston Hughes

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?
